    Measurement of model aeroelastic deformations in the wind tunnel at transonic speeds using stereophotogrammetry

    A stereophotographic method of determining the aeroelastic deformations of an airplane model under aerodynamic load in the wind tunnel was evaluated. Wind tunnel tests were conducted in the Langley 8 foot transonic pressure tunnel on the wing of a 0.0625 scale model of the TF-8A supercritical wing research airplane to obtain simultaneously the aerodynamic forces and moments, pressure distributions, and stereophotographs. Tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 0.80, 0.95, and 1.20, and at free stream dynamic pressures of 20,349 Pa and 40,698 Pa. Accuracy of the stereophotographic technique in determining wing deflections was within 0.013 cm under static conditions. This value translates to an error in wing twist of 0.10 deg inboard and increases to 0.20 deg outboard. When the model was under aerodynamic load in the wind tunnel, the accuracy of the stereophotographic technique of determining wind deflections increased to 0.052 cm when compared with static wing loadings because of the dynamic motion of the model in the tunnel

    2D linear friction weld modelling of a Ti-6Al-4V T-joint

    Most examples of linear friction weld process models have focused on joining two identically shaped workpieces. This article reports on the development of a 2D model, using the DEFORM finite element package, to investigate the joining of a rectangular Ti-6Al-4V workpiece to a plate of the same material. The work focuses on how this geometry affects the material flow, thermal fields and interface contaminant removal. The results showed that the material flow and thermal fields were not even across the two workpieces. This resulted in more material expulsion being required to remove the interface contaminants from the weld line when compared to joining two identically shaped workpieces. The model also showed that the flash curves away from the weld due to the rectangular upstand "burrowing" into the base plate.Understanding these critical relationships between the geometry and process outputs is crucial for further industrial implementation of the LFW process.EPSRC, The Welding Institut

    Wind tunnel investigation of an oblique wing transport model at mach numbers between 0.6 and 1.4

    Models of three practical oblique-wing transport configurations were tested in the NASA Ames 11 foot wind tunnel. The three configurations used a common forward fuselage, wing, and support system but employed different aft fuselage sections simulating alternate propulsion system installations. These included an integrated propulsion system, pylon-mounted nacelles, and clean (no propulsion system) configuration. The tests were conducted over a Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.4 and at sweep angles from 0 to 60 degrees. The nominal unit Reynolds number was 1.83 million per meter and the angle of attack range was -3 to +6 degrees. The models were mounted in the tunnel by means of a lower blade support system. The interference effects of this lower blade and the flow inclination were determined by using an image blade system and testing the configuration in both the upright and inverted positions

    Because of the high complexity in microstructure evolution in friction stir welding, it becomes very difficult to design optimal welding parameters. To solve this problem, in the current paper, soft computing based data driven models are developed to provide accurate and instant predictions for the welding process, and a multiobjective optimisation approach is employed to find optimal solutions to achieve the desired quality and economic objectives. The current work studies the aluminium AA5083-O as an example, where not only weld quality and mechanical properties of a joint but also in process properties and production cost are considered as objectives in the optimal design

    Evaluation of an online youth ambassador program to promote mental health

    To evaluate an online Youth Ambassador (YA) program designed to promote internet resources for mental health in an adolescent population, 56 YAs and 357 of their Year 10 peers from 11 Tasmanian schools completed e-mental health questionnaires before and after the YAs attended a single workshop session. The workshops, which were delivered in the high school setting, were either facilitated or self-directed. Self-reported awareness of e-mental health resources increased among both YAs and their peers. The peer group also showed increased frequency of recommending help-seeking to others. There were no differences in outcomes for facilitated or self-directed workshop formats. The results suggest that an online YA program delivered in school is useful in improving mental health awareness for workshop participants. While their Year 10 peer groups also showed increased awareness, this could not necessarily be attributed to the participation of all 11 schools in the YA program

    The Effectiveness of an Online Interdisciplinary Intervention for Mental Health Promotion: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background There is an urgent need for efficacious interventions to combat the global mental health crisis, and mental health promotion and primary prevention approaches are paramount. The aim of this study is to examine whether an online interdisciplinary intervention that incorporates evidence-based strategies from the disciplines of Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology improves measures of mental health and emotional wellness. Methods A randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control (N = 425, aged 46.97 ± 14.5, 69.9% females) was conducted in Australia and New Zealand. The intervention group participated in a 10-week online interdisciplinary intervention. Primary outcome measures of mental health and emotional wellness were taken at baseline (Week 1), post-intervention (Week 12), and 12 weeks post-intervention (Week 24). The wait-list control completed the same assessments. Results General Linear Modelling analyses indicated that the intervention group experienced significantly greater improvements than the wait-list control group over time in all outcome measures: mental health (F(319) = 7.326, p = 0.007) and vitality (F(319) = 9.445, p = 0.002) subscales of the Short Form Survey (SF-36); depression (F(319) = 7.841, p = 0.005), anxiety (F(319) = 4.440, p = 0.36) and stress (F(319) = 12.494, p \u3c 0.001) scales of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21); and life satisfaction (F(319) = 8.731, p = 0.003) as measured by the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Within the intervention group, significant improvements were observed from Week 1 to 12 in all outcome measures: mental health (10%, t(167) = − 6.423), p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.50), vitality (22%, t(167) = − 7.043, p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.54), depression (− 41%, t(167) = 6.189, p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.48), anxiety (− 38%, t(167) = 5.030, p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.39), stress (− 31%, t(167) = 6.702, p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.52) and life satisfaction (8%, t(167) = − 6.199, p \u3c 0.001, dz = 0.48). Improvements in the outcome measures remained significant in the intervention group at 12 weeks post-intervention. Conclusion The online interdisciplinary intervention improved measures of mental health and emotional wellness suggesting that such interventions may be useful for mental health promotion and prevention

    An increase in immature β-cells lacking Glut2 precedes the expansion of β-cell mass in the pregnant mouse

    A compensatory increase in β-cell mass occurs during pregnancy to counter the associated insulin resistance, and a failure in adaptation is thought to contribute to gestational diabetes. Insulin-expressing but glucose-transporter-2-low (Ins+Glut2LO) progenitor cells are present in mouse and human pancreas, being predominantly located in extra-islet β-cell clusters, and contribute to the regeneration of the endocrine pancreas following induced ablation. We therefore sought to investigate the contribution of Ins+Glut2LO cells to β-cell mass expansion during pregnancy. Female C57Bl/6 mice were time mated and pancreata were collected at gestational days (GD) 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18, and postpartum D7 (n = 4/time-point) and compared to control (non-pregnant) animals. Beta cell mass, location, proliferation (Ki67+), and proportion of Ins+Glut2LO cells were measured using immunohistochemistry and bright field or confocal microscopy. Beta cell mass tripled by GD18 and β-cell proliferation peaked at GD12 in islets (6 β-cells) and small β-cell clusters (1–5 β-cells). The proportion and fraction of Ins+Glut2LO cells undergoing proliferation increased significantly at GD9 in both islets and clusters, preceding the increase in β-cell mass and proliferation, and their proliferation within clusters persisted until GD15. The overall number of clusters increased significantly at GD9. Quantitative PCR showed a significant increase in Pdx1 presence at GD9 vs. GD18 or control pancreas, and Pdx1 was visualized by immunohistochemistry within both Ins+Glut2LO and Ins+Glut2HI cells within clusters. These results indicate that Ins+Glut2LO cells are likely to contribute to β-cell mass expansion during pregnancy

    Detection of abandoned mineshafts using towed-array capacitive resistivity and real-time kinematic GPS navigation

    The UK has a long history of mining but it was not until 1875 that the accurate mapping of mine workings and the submission of abandonment plans became a legal requirement. Where mineshafts are indicated on plans, they may be mislocated due to poor or inaccurate surveying. Consequently, the redevelopment of derelict land in the built environment frequently encounters potential geohazards, such as old adits, bell pits and shafts. These mining relics pose a serious risk to health and safety. This paper demonstrates how the combination of modem geophysical survey techniques with state-of-the-art satellite-based positioning may assist in the detection of such features. Recent advances in these fields offer the possibility of using towed-array resistivity instruments in conjunction with highly accurate (sub-decimetre) real-time kinematic global positioning systems (RTKGPS).     The Effect of an Online Multimodal Lifestyle Intervention on Mental Health and Emotional Wellness: A Randomised Control Trial

    PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of an online multimodal lifestyle intervention, which incorporated evidence-based strategies from Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology, on the mental health and emotional wellness of adults throughout Australia and New Zealand. BACKGROUND: Common mental health disorders have reached epidemic proportions worldwide (1). In the US, one in five adults have a common mental health disorder (2), and in Australia, a similar number have experienced an affective disorder in the past twelve months (3). Antidepressants are ranked in the top three most commonly used therapeutic drug classes in the US (4), and are the most commonly used psychotropic medications in Australia (5). A new paradigm is needed focusing on primary prevention to address this burgeoning mental health problem. METHODS: 508 individuals self-selected to participate in the study and were randomized to an intervention or delay-controlled group. Both groups completed an online survey using validated instruments which assessed the participantsʼ emotional wellness at three intervals: baseline, and at 3 months and 6 months post-intervention. 425 individuals completed the baseline assessment and entered the study (intervention n=217, control group n=208), and 359 (84%) completed the post intervention questionnaire. The intervention group participated in a 10-week online multimodal lifestyle intervention, called “The Live More Project” also known as The Lift Project”(6). RESULTS: Overall, the cohort was in the ‘normal’ range at baseline for the domains of emotional wellness measured. At 3 months, significant reductions were observed in symptoms of ‘depression’ (-31%, p\u3c0.001), ‘anxiety’ (-43%, p\u3c0.001) and ‘stress’ (-22%, p\u3c0.001) in the intervention compared to the control group. Significant improvements were observed in ‘mental health’ (8%, p\u3c0.001), ‘vitality’ (18%, p\u3c0.001) and overall ‘life 2 satisfaction’ (8%, p\u3c0.001). Improvements in the measures of mental health and emotional wellness were generally sustained in the 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the use of an online multimodal lifestyle intervention combining strategies from Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology for the promotion of mental health and emotional wellness among normal populations (i.e. primary prevention). Further analyses will examine the impact of the intervention on subnormal populations to assess its potential role in secondary and tertiary prevention

    The Influence of Human Support on the Effectiveness of an Online Mental Wellbeing Intervention

    Purpose: To compare the influence of three modes of human support on the outcomes of an online, lifestyle-focused mental health promotion intervention. Background: There is a need for efficacious lifestyle interventions to promote the mental wellbeing of both healthy and clinical cohorts. Evidence regarding the usefulness of adding human support (i.e. guidance) to improve the outcomes of online interventions for clinical populations is mixed,1-3 however little is known about healthy cohorts. Methods: A total of 458 participants self-selected to participate in a 10-week online, multimodal lifestyle intervention that addressed mental wellbeing. The participants were randomized into three groups, differentiated by support mode: standard - automated emails only (S); standard plus personalised SMS messages (S+pSMS); standard plus videoconference support (S+VCS). At pre- and post-intervention, the participants completed the following measures: the ‘mental health’ and ‘vitality’ sub-scales from the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36); Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21); Satisfaction With Life (SWL) scale; and Flourishing scale. Results: A total of 320 participants (S, n=103; S+pSMS, n=114; S+VCS, n=103) completed the study. Significant within-group changes were recorded from pre- to post-intervention in all groups for every outcome measure (PP=0.77), vitality (P=0.65), depression (P=0.93), anxiety (P=0.25), stress (P=0.57), SWL (P=0.65) or flourishing (P=0.99). Attendance at the weekly videoconference support sessions was poor, but those who attended seven or more of the ten sessions experienced significantly better outcomes in mental health (P=.006, d=0.71), vitality (P=.005, d=0.73), depression (P=.04, d=0.54), and SWL (P=.046, d=0.50), than those who attended less than seven. Conclusions: A lifestyle-focused, online mental health promotion intervention enhanced measures of mental wellbeing among a healthy cohort, irrespective of the human support provided. Supplementing a psychological intervention with videoconference support might improve outcomes, when attendance is optimised
